Slade versus T-Rex

Even though Marc Bolan died over twenty years ago and Noddy Holder has slipped into obscurity as a Local Radio DJ; the argument over which was the better of the two bands still rages on.

Well, now it's time for the Happy Hippy to put his opinion to the fore and settle the debate once and for all, in a light hearted, humorous but factual manner ...

Marc Bolan

Noddy Holder

Marc Bolan gained wide media exposure in the early 60's as an archetypal mod which led to a brief venture into the world of fashion.

Abandoning that image to Flower-Power; Bolan joined pioneering, Glam-Rock band John's Children in 1966 with immediate success and formed the progressive, acoustic-folk band Tyrannosaurus Rex in 1968.

The band shortened its name to T-Rex in 1970 and by 1972, with continuing chart success, had undergone a transformation into a rocking pop band with Bolan forming his own record label and becoming a pre-teen idol to rival the earlier Beatles and Monkees.

Slade formed in 1966 and slogged it out playing the club circuit in the Midlands as the 'N Betweens.

Changing their name to Ambrose Slade they attempted to cash-in on their skin-head image of bovver-boots and rolled-up trousers.

Having failed in that attempt; they shortened the name to Slade and finally reached the UK Charts in 1971 sporting an image of aggressive glitter, heavy stomping and loud guitar.

Marc Bolan did a socially aware Don't Litter campaign.

Noddy Holder has undertaken advertising for Fish and Chips and Asda whilst Slade's music is used to sell the Fiat Sinquentia and Ford Transit vans.

Marc Bolan tragically died on the 16th of September, 1977.

Noddy Holder didn't.

Marc Bolan explored a variety of musical styles and genres and also wrote and recited poetry.

Noddy Holder and Slade stuck to just one style; loud.

Marc Bolan was always seen as a personality that made him bigger than any of the bands of which he was a member.

Noddy Holder was never anything more than the front man / lead singer of Slade.

T-Rex brought us one of the longest and imaginative album titles ever; My People Were Fair And Had Sky In Their Hair But Now They're Content To Wear Stars On Their Brows.

No one in Slade can actually spell; Coz I Luv You, Look Wot You Dun, Mama Weer All Crazee Now, Cum On Feel The Noize and so on.

I own a variety of Marc Bolan, John's Children, Tyrannosaurus Rex and T-Rex albums and singles all of which are listened to on a fairly regular basis.

I own not one Slade album or single.

T-Rex can be found in the record shops under Bolan between The Blues Brothers and Gary 'US' Bonds.

Slade are found between Sky and Sly And The Family Stone.

T-Rex were definately the better of the two bands.

Slade weren't.
