Barbarella

Details :  France/Italy 1967 98m
Director :  Roger Vadim
Cast :  Jane Fonda, John Phillip Law, Anita Pallenberg, Milo O'Shea, David Hemmings, Marcel Marceau, Ugo Tognazzi, Claude Dauphan

Jane Fonda gets her kit off in the 40th century

Based on a risque comic strip adventure the film follows our 40th century astronaut around a strange world inhabited by angels and other strange beasts.

A superficial film that doesn't quite rate as a comedy but is certainly entertaining.

And Marcel Marceau has a speaking part.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind

Details :  US 1977 135m
Director :  Steven Spielberg
Cast :  Richard Dreyfus, Francois Truffaut, Teri Garr, Melinda Dillan, Gary Guffey
Awards :  Academy Award for Vilmos Zsigmond for photography and Academy Award Nominations for John Williams ( direction ), Douglas Trumball ( et al, special effects ) and Melinda Dillan.

We are not alone ...

An overly long film, but one that does manage to keep us with it, as we follow the events after a series of UFO's are seen over Indiana. A sort of extended version of Spielbergs Amazing Stories.

Interesting threads run throughout the film and the conclusion is a spectacular concept; unfortunately lacking in realism but carried off fairly well. The later Director's Cut cut down the middle and extended the ending; I'm still not sure which version I prefer.

A good mix of adventure, science fiction and anticipation if you can stick with it.

Dark Star

Details :  US 1974 83m
Director :  John Carpenter, Dan O'Bannon
Cast :  Brian Narelle, Dre Pahich, Cat Kuniholm, Dan O'Bannon

A bored crew endure their daily existance out amongst the stars

John Carpenter's first acclaimed film that became a cult classic; perhaps one of the lowest budget films that can be truly hailed as a success.

The low budget shows and the film sags at times but the general result is one of excellant screenplay and concept. Highly amusing in places and thought provoking at others.

Let there be light ...

Planet of the Apes

Details :  US 1968 119m
Director :  Franklin Schaffner
Cast :  Charlton Heston, Roddy McDowell, Kim Hunter, Maurice Evans, James Whitmore, james daly, Linda Harrison
Awards :  Academy Award for best make-up; John Chambers

An alternative Earth where Ape reigns over Man

The first and best of the series with an extremely simple plot; Astronauts get caught in a time warp and arrive on a future Earth where Apes dominate mankind.

The success of the film owes much to the credibility of the Apes themselves; superb make-up, backed up with brilliant actor characterisations, make it hard not to believe that such creatures really do exist.

The complete set of films in the series were ...

  • 1968, The Planet of the Apes
  • 1969, Beneath the Planet of the Apes
  • 1970, Escape from the Planet of the Apes
  • 1972, Conquest of the Planet of the Apes
  • 1973, Battle for the Planet of the Apes

A remake of the original film is scheduled for release in 1999.
