The Devils

Details :  UK 1970 111m
Director :  Ken Russell
Cast :  Vanessa Redgrave, Oliver Reed, Dudley Sutton, Max Adrian, Gemma Jones, Murray Melvin, Michael Gothard, Graham Armitage

Mass hysteria grips the nuns of Loudun

The apparently true story of the nuns of Loudon who were demonically possessed, amidst mass hysteria, in the 17th century.

Some have claimed this to show Russell at his sickest with outrageous imagery from start to finish and a particulary cricised sacrilegious dream of Christ.

The film does have its shock value but one can't help wondering if it really is representative of The Church at that time.

Not to everyone's taste and certainly not for the faint-hearted.

The Gospel According To St. Mathew

Details :  Italy/France 1964 142m Black and White / Subtitled
Director :  Pier Pablo Pasolini
Cast :  Enrique Irazoqui, Susanna Pasolini, Mario Socrate
Awards :  Academy Award Nomination for Luis Enrique Bacalov as Musical Director.

The story of christ told in docu-drama format

Probably the best of the Story of Christ films.

Notable in particular for its complete lack of Hollywood sensationalism, grand settings and clean-cut cast; the complete contrast to The Greatest Story Ever Told.

The casting of an unknown to play Christ, extras that are gritty, imperfect and representative of reality delivered in its native language ( thankfully not overdubbed ) combine to present a film that carries far more weight and embraces the story of Christ more than most western films have; the TV series Jesus of Nazareth being the notable exception.

Stripped of all Hollywood glamour; this is a film that brings the fundamental story to the fore.

The Greatest Story Ever Told

Details :  US 1965 225m
Director :  George Stevens
Cast :  Max von Sydow, Dorothy McGuire, Claude Rains, Jose Ferrer, David McCallum, Charlton Heston, Sidney Pottier,Donald Pleasance, Roddy McDowell, Gary Raymond, Carroll Baker, Pat Boone, Van Heflin, Sal Mineo, Shelley Winters, Ed Wynn, John Wayne, Telly Savalas, Angela Lansbury, Joseph Schildkraut, Victor Buono, Nehemiah Persoft

A plodding story of the life of Christ studded throughout with more stars than a modern production company could consider paying for.

However, the near two and a half hours of solemn and reverential spectacal has got to be viewed in order to completely appreciate the immortal words uttered by John Wayne post crucifixion; which is the only reason it's in the recommended list.

Originally released with a running time of nearly four and a half hours we can at least be grateful that it has been edited down so we get to John Wayne's climax relatively quickly these days.
