Why aren't there any graphics on this site ?

The main reason for not including graphics on a site is that it can drastically increase download time for those connected to the web via modems and not through mega-bit-per-second links provided by the companies they work for.

Given that there is very little in the UK by way of free internet access for modem users; surfing the web can incur huge telephone call charges which are considerably increased when large graphic file downloads are involved.

However; this is not the sole reason that very few graphics have been included on this site ...

What is the point of including a graphic when it serves no real purpose ?

None.

Ok, I'll accept that spinning 'Go To Home Page' GIF's are very pretty and are fine on a free connection but what purpose do they really serve ?

Again, none.

I believe that the content of a particular page is measured by the usefulness of that page to the reader and not by how pretty it looks. This is certainly true when one is looking at an FTP site which holds raw text information and there is no possibilty of including any clever graphics.

The graphics which I have used are all small, static .GIF files that should be cached by your browser and, being used repetitively, should not increase the load time of the web pages.

Okay, some nice animated graphics may enhance the look of a page but do they always add to its usefulness ? I think not.

So, given that graphics are just pretty, may make a page more visually exciting but don't actually enhance its usabilty I'll not worry about having any flash graphics.

Yes, I may add more graphics in the future, but, for now, I'm more worried about providing something that is useful and usable. You can be assured that if I do add more graphics, in the future, it will be to enhance the usability of the site not just to make it prettier.

In the meantime; welcome to graphically disadvantaged city.
