About this siteThis entire site was constructed by hand using nothing more than imagination, an MS-DOS editor and a desire to provide what is, hopefully, a useful and interesting site that you will link to.The decision to use frames, JavaScript and Dynamic HTML on various web pages was made because they enhance the functionality of the site and not because they are the latest HTML formatting gimmick. I apologise to those of you who have not upgraded to a browser that supports frames, JavaScript and Dynamic HTML yet but making these pages compatible with those browsers is a job that's too demanding to undertake. Unfortunately that means this site is best viewed with Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 or 5.0 - Sorry. The site has been kept clear of flashy graphics because I don't consider that these enhance the content provided. Where such graphics enhance the site content they have been used and more graphics may be included in the future - but only where the addition of graphics will enhance the usability of the site. The complete list of film recommendations, the aptitude test and quick quiz challenge questions and answers along with the music collection and video collection listings are automatically generated from text databases by a suite of MS-DOS programs. The complete site is developed, and backed up, on my local PC and is converted to a flat-site file set, for ease of uploading, by the use of this suite of programs. This program suite condenses the individual web pages to conserve the valuable resource of disk space, takes care of any conversion between MS-DOS file naming conventions and those of the operating system upon which the web server delivering these pages runs and attempts to make the HTML code acceptable by Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 compatible with other browsers whilst automatically censoring any rude words where necessary. The program suite also creates a list of 'work to do' to complete pages on this site ( there's a lot to do still, but, I'm getting there ) and a Whats New ? listing. The flat-site file set is uploaded on to the web page host server using FTP or using browser based uploads. For quality testing I am running the Xitami HTTP and FTP Server from Imatix under Windows 98 ( using TCP/IP ) to check the flat-site file set under an Intranet configuration without requiring a permanent on-line connection through an Internet Service Provider ( ISP ). For anyone looking to use a web server in an intranet environment; I highly recommend the Xitami server as an alternative to the Microsoft Personal Web Server. This server is 100% FreeWare and offers excellent performance ( even under Windows 95 ) and superb facilities including CGI, SSI, Page Filtering and an FTP Server. Special AcknowledgementsI am completely indebted FreeServe without whom this site would not have been possible and, one day, hope to repay their generosity for providing ther useful ISP services. | ||||
