Everyone's gone to the moon ...

The second Asteroid Collides With Earth, Read All About It movie this year and certainly much better than Deep Impact.

While Deep Impact tried to keep us captivated for the final, effects laden, scene; Armageddon dives straight in with the, "What the f--k was that ?", approach as parts of an asteroid, the size of Texas, come crashing through as a precursor to a much bigger collision with good old Terra Firma.

So when the Earth's about to die, who you gonna call ? A bunch of red-neck oil rig workers.

Er, okay.

This dysfunctional, odd-ball, family are much more entertaining than the Robinson family and actually manage to carry off their, "Yeah, they could do that", roles with humour and captivation.

The willing suspension of disbelief is well paced and well delivered and whilst the plot, being pretty obvious really, isn't overly exciting it is extremely well executed and never really lapses into plot padding.

The heroes save the planet. But that's not a surprise.

The final America Saves The Day, Again scenes were a little too American and sickly patriotic for me and I half expected the film to end with a voice-over echoing, "The destruction of the world was averted with thanks to the Coca-Cola Corporation of America", as the world drowned in a sea of Star Spangled Banners.

Luckily it wasn't quite that bad, but it came close at times.

An excellent all round, action film. And the special effects were very well done indeed.
