Every ant has his day

The first film to be completely computer generated since Toy Story, and,
like its predecessor, its success is due to the superb characterisations of the
main players.
I am not a loyal fan of Woody Allen but this movie is a superb vehicle for his
humorous monologues on existence and life itself; in some ways the film is a
Woody Allen movie and the choice of voice was a good one.
The story is a typical Ant meets Ant, Ant falls in love with Ant, Ants have
a great adventure, and Ants live happily ever after in perfect harmony type
story. Z ( Zee ), a worker ant, falls in love with Princess Bala who is bequethed to
General Mandible, a soldier ant ( obviously ). Z gets himself into the army to
get a chance to see his love again but is sent off to fight the Termites. As
the only survivor he returns, the hero; much to the anoyance of the General
who is hatching a devious plot. In the ensuing fracas; Z and Bala are catapulted out of their colony and embark
on a search for Insectopia, return and save the day.
The animations are exceedingly well done and on a grand scale although the
product placement was a little too obvious. The screenplay works
wonderfully. The script is genuinely funny although much will go straight over the heads of
the younger audience, which is perhaps just as well.
A visual feast for the young and not-so-young alike. It will be interesting to
see how Disney's A Bugs Life compares.
